Grancherokee "swim" capability

Inlägg av aatee » lör aug 15, 2009 10:34

Hello, SOrry i write English, but cannot so good svenska.

I have question about GranCHerokee 93-98 "swimming" capabilities.
I need a 4X4 to quite tough terrain here in Lapland, one necessary thing is to go over some small rivers.
How deep GrandCherokee can go? without modifications?
with modifications bigger tires and so on?

Any other things to take care when passings rivers?

I think it can go as deep as 70cm. The GC looks better the more you lift it but a 3 inch lift and 32" tires it looks really good and it´s cheap. You can make your own liftkit or buy a bolton-kit.

With that lift and tire combo it can go 5inch (about 12cm) deeper in the water.

The air intake is placed behind/under left front headlight, not the best place if you plan to ford som deeper water. Relocation of the intake is quite simple, I can supply you some pictures how I did on my I6.
If this isn't enough a snorkel can be made or bought.

The distributor is located quite high on both the V8 and I6 models, slightly higher and more protected on the V8.

Information above is for the Grand Cherokee ZJ (-93 - -98 ) models.

First photo is bone stock Grand cherokee with 215/70-15 wheels
(Smaller than original.) in about 60 cm, water.
No problem at all.

Second photo is same car but at a standstill in about 1 meter depth.
Wet and smelly but still driveable when recovered and drained.

So, as Marcus said earlier, about 70 cm, should be managable.
But if you stop at that depht, your feet will get wet.

at this moment going with Uaz

Inlägg av aatee » sön aug 16, 2009 12:27

Hej,
this sounds very good for me. Some background.
At this moment I use Uaz469. it is rather old -75 and some uncomfortable going to "fjäll" here in Lappland.

I use the 4x4 to go hunting, fishing, berries etc.

The terrain is quite demanding with all those "fjäll" grounds, some swamp, mud, lot of rocks, and those small rivers.
But also I need to frive some "normal" roads in everyday usage, but this is not main thing.

I have thought to get GransCherokee 98 with V8 for this kind of work to replace Uaz.

I need something more comfortable 4x4 with enough room/space(4-5 persons, dogs, all those necessary outdoor things with us..), very good offroad capability, "cheap" to buy, possibility to "rebuild" the car to some better performance on terrain etc.

This information about swimming sounds quite good to be.
PLease tell me more about the grandcherokee for my purpose.
Would it be good 4x4 for me?

It is a very good car fo you. A jeep is a car to rebuild! :D I have had 2 GC sofar and it´s a comfortably, offroad capable and a cheap car to buy. The spareparts are cheap but it wants a lot of petrol. About 2.5 liters/mil in the city and 1.2-1.3/mil on the highway. The v8 is a "bulletroof" engine with perfect performance.

I say: Buy it!! :D

5.9L V( an option?

Inlägg av aatee » tor aug 20, 2009 20:39

Hello,

one more question.
How it is with those V8 engines.

Would the 5.8 V8 model be somekind of better than the smaller 5.2?
How is the gasoline mileage with these bigger engines?

As Marcus-84 said, 13 liter/100 km. Calculated in Google:

Highway
13 l/100 km = 18.0934295 miles / US gallon

City
25 l/100 km = 9.40858333 miles / US gallon

So about 18 mpg on the highway an 9 mpg in the city... I think it is about the same in offroad driving as in citydriving... :)
